Best alternative love songs

If you’re reading this and hoping to get some ideas of songs to put on your Valentine’s Day playlist stop reading now, you’re in the wrong place. I have decided to look at love from a more holistic point of view. I think we are all sick of listening to songs like “Lady in red” and “I will always love you”.  We often pigeon hole the word “love” as that of the relationship between a man and a woman;  that’s merely one of the many unique facets of love, there are so many more. What about the love between a man and his dog or a man and a beef burger. Is that not love as well?  Women love a lot more than their partner.  For example designer shoes receive a lot of love from the women of the world (lucky bastards!). So my alternative top 5 love songs are not from man/woman to woman/man instead they are from man/woman to an object of affection.

50 cent "Candy Shop"

So first up we have the great 50cent and his classic ode to sex with “the candy shop”. Fity as he’s known, cleverly or derogatorily depending on which way you want to look at it invites women to his “candy shop” where he promises to leave them “lick his lolly pop” until he goes “whoah”. It doesn’t take a lyrical genius to work out what he’s alluding to here. Both the lyrics and the backing track drip with sexual energy, so much so that it’s become the mating anthem of the century.

The stranglers "Golden Brown"

In 1981 the stranglers released the melodic “golden brown” a single that was soon to become one of most popular songs of the 80’s. Many people naively believed it was about a girl, the object of lead singers Hugh Cornwell’s affection, thinking that golden brown referred to the ladies soft brown skin. How wrong they were, it soon became clear that the object of his affection in the song wasn’t a girl but Heroin. With lyrics like “Lays me down and with my mind she runs” and “Never a frown with golden brown” it’s a wonder people didn’t figure it out sooner.

Jay-Z "New York"

Next up we see one of the biggest R&B moguls of the moment express his love for the city that never sleeps; New York. Jay Z recently released “Empire state of mind” is a single from his new album Blueprint 3. To me it seems like another overplayed rap song but the radio stations are eating it up and it’s sure to become a classic. In the words of the maestro himself “Let’s hear it for New York”.

The Cure "Friday Im in Love"

In 1987 the cure declared their love for a day of the week with their song “Friday I’m in love”. I still wonder to this day why they were so worried about the days of the week. Aren’t rock stars supposed to be beyond the normal working week? It’s not like they have to get up on a rainy Monday morning and face the office. Anyways, whatever the case was with the Cures rock and roll star work week they wrote this song for Friday. Maybe it was to cheer up all us plebeians!

 Terrorvision "Tequila"

Finally we have probably one of the most annoying songs from the 90’s. Anyone remember the song tequila from Terrorvision? Do you want me to jog your memory?”Oh tequila it makes me happy” “Con tequila when the doors are opened, con tequila when they’re calling time”. If that doesn’t help just check it up on you tube, but be warned you’ll be mumbling it to yourself in the metro for weeks to come. Like all good love songs Terrorvision are as much cursing Tequila as they are declaring their love for it. The song is catchy and certainly makes you smile and whoever thought it was a love song?
